When we think of the festive period, we often think of a time of celebration and happiness, but this can also be a difficult time of year for many. Looking after your mental health at work can help in reducing stress leading up to the big day.

We all have mental health, and that is why Community Pharmacy Scotland has chosen to work with SAMH as its chosen charity this year. One in six in every workforce is likely to be affected by a mental health problem, so SAMH is supporting employers to prioritise mental health.

Research by the Centre of Mental Health has shown that sickness absence due to mental health problems cost Scottish employers £690 million per year; and presenteeism, or working while unwell, costs £1,240 million per year. Taking proactive steps to create a more open and supportive culture should, over time, see staff more confident to talk to managers about their mental health.
